I believe that complying with legislative, administrative and organisation requirements is imperative within the teaching profession.
I have completed an online professional learning unit of Child Protection and Abuse Prevention. This course was a starting point to help me recognise the signs of abuse and to help me to know what my role is in protecting children.
I learned a lot of different things from this unit. The key things were to understand the impact that child abuse has in WA, to understand the legislation relevant to Child Protection, how to recognise signs of child abuse, my role and obligations to record and report child abuse and lastly, how to respond when I have concerns about child abuse.

7.3 - Engage with the parents/carers
7.3 - Engage with the parents/carers
This year, my school participated in an online program called 'A Day Made Better'. This program is designed to celebrate and recognise exceptional teachers across the country. Parents, students and fellow staff members were given the opportunity to provide recognition and appreciation to teachers within the school. Below are some of the comments I received from parents and students in 2016. The comments show that I have not only established and maintained respectful and collaborative relationships with parents/carers regarding their children's learning and well-being but that I have identified, initiated and built on opportunities to engage parents/carers in bit the progress of their children's learning and in the educational priorities of the school.
"Mrs. Pember is full of energy and new ideas, she always makes learning fun for the children and constantly keeps them engaged. Not often do you come across someone who is so dedicated to her job and values what the children bring to her classroom as too what she brings. She deserves to be nominated for her hard work and dedication."
Tamryn Fazari
"I think Julia Pember is a great teacher because she is kind and funny and respects lots of people(Oscar)."
Pamela Robinson
"Teacher goes above and beyond for students in need and I believe my nominated teacher has full marks on it."
Nokhez Akhtar
"I think Mrs Pember should win because she educates me and I like it and she works very hard to educate not just me but, 30 other different students. I also think she is nice and helpful. I think this because educating 30 students for a primary school teacher is definitely not easy and I know it can be frustrating because my mother is a college teacher and she works very hard as well. Mrs Pember also works very early and works hard during the day. Mrs Pember is also always organised for the day to educate 30 different students so I must admit, that is pretty impressive for all five week days at school. So thats why I think Mrs Pember should win the prize!"
Teddie Lei
"I nominate Mrs Pember because she always has a smile on her face in the morning and the afternoon. She is my favourite teacher because, at the start of the year she helped anyone that needed help in anyway she could and still does. Those are 2 reasons why I nominate Mrs Pember."
Abigail Awidi
"My Son is new in this school and she gave him a lot of confidence when he was nervous for new Situation."
Nell Golzar(Meshkat Hazrati)
"It's with great pleasure that I nominate Mrs Julia Pember for consideration for A Day Made Better 2016 in recognition of her diligence and hard work as a Year 4 and 5 combined class teacher. Mrs Pember is a dedicated teacher who has done a wonderful job. One of the examples is her way of connecting with students and parents through Edmodo, Classdojo, classroom charts and other communication methods. She is a motivating teacher and my son enjoys being in her class and learning from her. I was very impressed by her good advice during the first parent-teacher interview regarding my son's learning and development. I wish her every success in this competition and her future teaching."
Grace Yu
"She is a considerate, because she helps my and everyone saying mistakes. I also think she is encouraging, because she says to do the right stuff."
Areeb Nokhez
"Mrs Pember is a fantastic teacher who ensures her students feel secure and comfortable in her class. Her learning is done through play and her classroom is fun and enjoyable to be in. Our son really enjoys going to school to learn now and feels like an important member of the class. Thanks Mrs Pember!"

Standard 7 -Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
7.4 - Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
7.4 - Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
I believe it is vitally important to connect and engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities in order to reflect and grow as a teacher.
My school is part of the Mount Lawley Schools Network. This network is comprised of 9 different local primary schools. Once a year have a whole day school conference on different topics that are current and relevant to us. This network has provided me with the opportunity to meet other teachers, discuss key teaching and learning strategies and to learn about some amazing programs that are running in other schools.
During my first 2 years of teaching, I participated in all four of the Graduate modules.
Each module aligns to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and emphasises self-reflection and the sharing of practice as key elements of professional growth. The modules build the skills and understandings needed to become a highly effective classroom teacher. I found the modules extremely beneficial in my development as an effective teacher and they allowed me to network with fellow teachers in the same stage of their career as I.
My school runs a local network known as the WWW club. I have attended a number of these meetings and have even presented at a couple. The WWW club is a small network where staff from local schools, share different things to do with technology and how they are using it within their classroom. I have found these network meetings extremely beneficial to my teaching in that I have been exposed to some many new and exciting websites, apps and programs that I now use regularly in my classroom.
These professional teaching networks have allowed me to broaden my knowledge on a plethora of topics and have improved my practice significantly. I look forward to attending and contributing to many more of these networks in the future.
